IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates selected for the Associate Laboratory Microbiologist position will be appointed on a provisional basis. They must pass the next civil service examination and obtain a list number from the NYC Dept. of Citywide Administrative Services to be considered for permanent employment. Failure to pass the exam or be reached on the list will result in termination of provisional employment.
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) manages water supply, wastewater, and pollution control for New York City. DEP employs nearly 6,000 staff and oversees a vast watershed system.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) operates and maintains sewage treatment facilities across the five boroughs, including treatment plants, laboratories, and other infrastructure. The selected candidate will work under supervision, performing microbiological testing, quality control, equipment maintenance, data recording, and supporting research programs, including molecular analysis using PCR.
