Job Role Summary

The Mobile Equipment Technician performs essential maintenance and repair tasks for motor vehicles, tractors, trailers, generators, and small engines. This entry-level role involves conducting routine service duties, inspecting vehicle conditions for safety, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Technician will also stay updated on technology and attend training as necessary to maintain skills. Perform other duties as assigned to support other technicians.

Day in Life: A typical day involves performing basic maintenance and repairs on various vehicles and equipment under the guidance of more experienced technicians. You’ll assist with inspections and ensure that all vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with safety standards. You will engage in continuous learning to improve your skills and knowledge in equipment maintenance.

Essential Duties

Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance (91%) (1.1,2.1,2.4)

  • Perform basic maintenance and repair of all corporate vehicles and support equipment safely and on time.
  • Assist other techs with maintenance.
  • Refuel vehicles and operate the corporate refueling station efficiently.
  • Retrieved and delivered various materials, supplies, and automotive components as directed.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections to evaluate roadworthiness and address defects in compliance with Department of Transportation standards.

    Continuous Learning (10%) (3.2,7.8)

  • Stay current with technology and practices relevant to vehicle maintenance and repair. (Core Competency.
  • Attend training sessions to ensure skill levels meet job requirements.
Associated Job Duties
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and responses as directed.
  • Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling at least eight (8) hours annually.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Assist with additional tasks as needed by the team.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required: High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Enrollment or recent graduation from a vocational/technical program in Automotive/Diesel Technology preferred (or willingness to complete).

Experience:

Entry-Level Exposure

    • Some experience (part-time, internship, or shop classes) in automotive or mechanical environments preferred.
    • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude through personal projects, relevant coursework, or limited on-the-job training.

Team Support

    • Comfortable assisting more experienced mechanics with daily tasks.
    • Able to follow structured guidance on safety and tool usage.
Licenses/Certifications Required
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Indiana Driver’s License.
  • Obtain a Class “A” commercial driver’s license within one year of employment.
  • Certified in air conditioning, tires, brakes, and boom truck safety (to be obtained within one year).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Foundational Mechanical Understanding

  • Basic familiarity with gasoline and/or diesel engines, including routine checks on fluids, belts, and hoses.
  • Limited but growing knowledge of manual/automatic transmissions, braking systems, and electrical circuits.

Introductory Tools & Equipment Proficiency

  • Comfort with basic hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers) and some power tools.
  • Ability to safely use shop equipment under supervision, such as lifts, hoists, and tire-changing

Safety & Compliance Awareness

  • Understanding of core safety practices: proper PPE usage, hazard communication, and basic shop etiquette.
  • Willingness to learn OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations relevant to fleet maintenance.

Eagerness to Learn

  • Strong desire to develop troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Open-minded approach to new techniques, technologies, and training opportunities.

Record-Keeping & Team Communication

  • Basic understanding of how to document completed work and keep accurate maintenance logs.
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate with senior mechanics regarding issues or concerns.
Working Environment
  • Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of heavy physical effort, typically involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. These tasks may include the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Tasks involve long periods of standing and working with arms above shoulder level.
  • Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, to perceive and discriminate depths, and to see small details accurately. Some tasks require hearing high and low frequency sounds at various volumes, distinguishing between sounds, and determining locations from which sounds emanate. Some tasks require the ability to carefully feel differences in surface roughness.
  • Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, strong odors, smoke, fumes, pollen, machinery, temperature and noise extremes, and toxic/poisonous agents.
