Job summary

Paylocity is seeking an enthusiastic Machine Learning Engineering Intern for its Product & Technology group in Rochester, NY. You will contribute to scoped ML engineering work under mentorship, building ML software, data pipelines, and supporting infrastructure.

This learning-focused role emphasizes guided, hands-on experience rather than ownership of production systems, with opportunities to learn from experienced engineers and participate in internship programs.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, ML, Data Science, or related field.
• Foundational Python programming experience.
• Foundational understanding of software engineering concepts (data structures, algorithms, testing, version control).
• Coursework or project experience with AI/ML systems, including observability or evaluation concepts.
• Familiarity with Git or another version control system.
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate technical ideas clearly.
• Strong curiosity and willingness to learn unfamiliar tools and technologies.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to design, implementation, testing, and improvement of shared AI platform capabilities within defined scope.
• Build on AI platform components to support AI-powered product experiences.
• Contribute to building or improving conversational interfaces and flows.
• Help develop AI observability and evaluation capabilities (tracing, metrics, debugging).
• Write clean, well-documented Python code following engineering standards.
• Collaborate with Data Science/Engineering to integrate models and data workflows into software solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and CI/CD workflows.
• Document technical decisions and lessons learned from internship projects.
