Job summary

American Commercial Barge Line is seeking an experienced Lower Miss Pilot/Captain with 25+ barge experience to lead vessels along the Mississippi system. This full-time role offers 28 days aboard followed by 28/14 days off and a focus on safe navigation and crew leadership.

You will supervise crews, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain logs, while upholding environmental standards and vessel security requirements. Travel between training locations is required.

Qualifications

  • Master of Towing Vessels upon Western Rivers license required.
  • Inland Waters or Near Coastal Endorsement.
  • Must meet USCG physical examination requirements.
  • Must travel to vessel/training locations by air or vehicle.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • 28 days onboard and 28/14 days off schedule with overtime as needed.
  • 6 hours on / 6 hours off or 12-hour watches.
  • Experience pushing 25+ barges on the Lower Miss.
  • Able to ride crew boats or Zodiac to vessels.
  • Maintain active USCG licensing and TWIC.

Responsibilities

  • Navigate vessels safely and efficiently along major Mississippi River routes.
  • Supervise and lead the vessel's crew to maintain safety and cohesion.
  • Ensure adherence to federal/local maritime regulations and environmental standards.
  • Respond to navigational challenges and emergencies to protect crew and cargo.
  • Maintain logs and voyage records including charts and incident reports.
  • Serve as Vessel Security Officer under the Vessel Security Plan.
  • Enforce company policies and vessel guidelines for Crew Endurance Management.
  • Report CDC barges at designated points to Inland River Vessel Movement Center.
