Job summary

Mini Bus Driver – School Transportation

Position Title: Mini Bus Driver Department: Transportation

Reports To: Transportation Director

Summary: The Mini Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, school-related activities, and other approved locations. The driver ensures the safety and well-being of students while providing dependable, courteous, and professional transportation services. This position requires adherence to all school district policies and applicable state and federal transportation and traffic regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Safely operate a school mini bus on assigned routes and schedules. Transport students to and from school, programs, activities, and other approved locations. Maintain appropriate student behavior and a safe environment while students are on the vehicle. Ensure students enter and exit the vehicle safely and at designated locations. Follow assigned routes, schedules, and transportation procedures. Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle. Perform a thorough post-trip check to ensure no student remains on the vehicle. Report mechanical problems, safety concerns, accidents, incidents, and student behavior concerns promptly. Maintain the cleanliness and general appearance of the assigned vehicle. Assist students with entering, exiting, and securing themselves in the vehicle when necessary. Maintain confidentiality regarding students and student information. Communicate professionally with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and Transportation Department personnel. Follow district procedures regarding student pickup and release. Maintain required records, reports, and documentation. Participate in required training, safety meetings, and professional development. Follow emergency procedures and respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, severe weather, medical emergencies, and other situations. Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license and appropriate license/endorsements as required for the type and capacity of vehicle operated. Must meet all applicable state and district requirements for operating a school transportation vehicle. Must successfully complete required background checks, driving record reviews, physical examinations, drug/alcohol testing, and training as applicable. Ability to safely operate a mini bus under various traffic and weather conditions. Ability to work effectively and respectfully with children of varying ages and needs. Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential. Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies or challenging student situations.

Physical Requirements:

The employee must be able to sit for extended periods while driving; frequently enter and exit the vehicle; bend, reach, and turn to perform inspections and assist students; and safely operate all vehicle controls and safety equipment. The employee may occasionally be required to lift or assist with equipment and student belongings consistent with district procedures.

Work Schedule:

Typically works during morning and afternoon student transportation periods on days school is in session. Additional hours may be available for field trips, extracurricular activities, special programs, or other district transportation needs.

General Expectations:

The Mini Bus Driver serves as an important representative of the school district and is often one of the first and last district employees students interact with each school day. Drivers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, patience, dependability, good judgment, and a commitment to student safety at all times.
