Responsibilities

  • Operate the bus on the approved time schedule.
  • Report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.
  • Conduct emergency evaluation drills per division regulations.
  • Instruct riders on being responsible passengers and safety rules.
  • Drive defensively under varying conditions and weather.
  • Prioritize safety of students in all driving decisions.
  • Report absences timely to secure a substitute driver.
  • Perform bus housekeeping inside and out.
  • Refuel and add oil as necessary.
  • Report bus defects to supervisor or head of mechanics.
  • Foster positive relationships with drivers, staff, and students.
  • Represent the school division positively in the community.
  • Know applicable local/state/federal rules and regulations.

Job description

To assist with transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions in a school vehicle, ensuring the safety and care of students, loading and unloading

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency. The requirement may be waived after a successful personal interview with school board personnel.
  • Submit at least two references attesting to the applicant's ability, character, and personal qualifications
  • Minimum hours of instruction
  • Satisfactorily pass the knowledge examination
  • Meet state requirements for appropriate licensing
  • Meet local or state standards for the driving test
  • Meet local or state standards for driver record check
  • All drivers must submit to random alcohol/drug testing
  • Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students
  • Ability to operate a telephone and radio communication when necessary

Director of Transportation.

Coordinator of Transportation

Principals of the school(s) he/she serves on matters related to student discipline and patron relations

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • To conduct pre-trip inspection of the school bus prior to stops, at every trip, for defects
  • To use established routes and designated bus
  • To operate the bus on the approved time schedule
  • To report bus accidents and student injuries to the authorities
  • To conduct emergency evaluation drills in keeping with division regulations
  • To instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers
  • To drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather
  • To drive with the safety of students as the first priority
  • To report absences in time for the supervisor to secure a substitute driver
  • To perform bus housekeeping duties inside and out
  • To fill the gas tank and add oil if necessary
  • To report bus defects to the supervisor or the head of mechanics
  • To establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, students, principals, and the total school staff
  • To exhibit a positive image as a local representative of the school division
  • To demonstrate knowledge of rules and regulations promulgated by local, state, and federal authorities
  • To demonstrate knowledge of state laws and local ordinances
  • To deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders
  • To administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations
  • To be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles, and irregular special requests by parents of riders
  • To comply with the dress code
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Coordinator of Transportation
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work involves limited physical tasks and may require limited lifting, stooping, and climbing stairs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

10-month contract

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluationof School Transportation Personnel
