What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

The Weapon Systems Engineering (W) Division provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our nation's nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. W Division leads activities in stockpile assessment, certification, and life extension projects.

The Military & Stockpile Operations Office (W-MSO) seeks a Military Interface Engineer (R&D Engineer) to join our team. As an R&D Engineer in W-MSO, you will work with the Sandia National Laboratories Military Liaison (SNL-ML) Organization to interface with the Department of Defense supporting weapons maintenance activities. You will also support W-MSO's mission at WESTEC and learn about LANL's weapons in the US stockpile.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the interface for certain military activities to LANL weapon systems and components.
  • Coordinating with W-MSO, internal stakeholders, and subject matter experts on technical publications and unresolved reports.
  • Networking with peers and representing LANL externally at military and stockpile activities.
  • Developing technical approaches and innovative methods to improve capabilities.
  • Leading specific project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Supporting WESTEC operations, including developing training programs and R&D activities.
  • Planning and executing own activities to meet objectives.
  • Work is periodically overseen and reviewed by supervisors.
R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

In addition to the above, at this level, you will:

  • Develop advanced concepts and methods for specialized problems.
  • Lead the development of technical products and responses to technical challenges.
  • Influence organizational strategies and directions.
  • Make technical decisions influencing program objectives.
  • Mentor and train junior staff.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Knowledge of US Nuclear Weapons Enterprise and LANL weapon systems; experience in design, development, qualification, or related operations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and resolve technical issues independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills with all levels of management and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work professionally with internal and external peers, fostering effective relationships.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Additional for R&D Engineer 3
  • Deep knowledge of engineering disciplines and research project execution.
Education/Experience
  • Engineer 2: Bachelor's Degree + 4 years related experience or equivalent.
  • Engineer 3: Master's Degree + 6 years related experience or equivalent; Ph.D. preferred.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of nuclear weapon design, surveillance, and related military operations.
  • Experience with weapon system interfaces, military maintenance, and training programs.
  • Leadership and security clearance (Q) experience.
