What You Will Do

The W93 System Development and Realization Group (Q-20) is seeking Research and Development Engineers (R&D 2/3) to join one of our production realization teams (PRTs). You will work with various PRT leads and the Primary or Secondary physics team to design, engineer, certify/qualify, and field new and/or reprocessed components for the W93 warhead. The W93 PRTs are comprised of Systems and Product Realization Engineers.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

The W93 System Development and Realization Group (Q-20) defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the Navy’s newest missile program. We collaborate with national laboratories and defense contractors to ensure safe, reliable warhead performance.

Responsibilities

1. Work under the guidance of the Production Realization Team lead to design, engineer, certify/qualify, and field W93 components.
2. Collaborate with production agencies to develop processes for component development and production.
3. Conduct technical research into component development and qualification.
4. Generate technical reports to document decisions and respond to NNSA taskings.
5. Participate in reviews and briefings with management and external customers.

Specific Areas of Need

• Pit Reacceptance PRT - responsible for design, development, and qualification related to pit reacceptance, interfacing with multiple LANL organizations and Pantex.
• Secondary PRT (non-metals) - responsible for non-metallic component processes, interfacing with LANL and Y-12.

Minimum Qualifications

For R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700-$168,200):

• Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures.
• Experience in designing, planning, and executing R&D projects.
• Ability to communicate technical material clearly.

Additional for R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300-$206,300):

• Experience delivering complex engineering projects.
• Leadership experience leading small teams.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering + 4 years of related experience, or
• Master’s Degree in Engineering + 6 years of related experience, or
• Ph.D. may be preferred at the higher level.

Desired Qualifications

• Active Q clearance or equivalent.
• Degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Materials, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Experience with nuclear weapon design, development, or surveillance.
• Knowledge of systems engineering and program management practices.

Work Environment

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. The position requires a 1-year commitment. Domestic travel may be required.
