Job summary

Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is seeking a Milieu Counselor / Nursing Assistant Float for the Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry unit at CHA Everett Hospital. The position is part-time, with nights from 11pm to 7:30am and every other weekend, totaling 16 hours per week.

The role supports a multidisciplinary team under a RN supervisor to maintain a safe, structured milieu. Responsibilities include assisting with ADLs, leading groups, safety checks, 1:1 patient meetings, and documenting vital signs,

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required.
• At least one year inpatient clinical mental health experience in a behavioral health unit is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists with activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Leads or co-leads groups and participates in patient programming.
• Performs safety checks and 1:1 meetings with patients.
• Charts patients' blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration and weight.
• Maintains patients' nutritional and hydration needs.
• Communicates changes in vital signs to nurses and documents intake/output.

Lewis 2 is a 22 bed Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit for patients who are aged 55 and older. We provide a vibrant activities program along with special group sessions and programming to provide support. A designated activity group room houses musical instruments, art supplies and other items to engage individual patient strengths and interests. Patients are cared for by a dynamic interdisciplinary psychiatry team of nurses, milieu counselors, providers and social workers.

The schedule for this position is two weekend days and evenings (rotation), Sat and Sun, every other weekend only.

Even though it is a limited schedule, it does require an extensive paid orientation which includes 7 consecutive full days (typically 8am-4:30pm) of hospital orientation (offsite) in Malden as well as about 3-5 weeks of regular shifts (about 24 hours per week or 3 eight hour shifts per week) on the unit until you've completed the unit orientation. After that you would start with your regular every other weekend schedule.

Job Purpose

Providing quality care according to Cambridge Health Alliance standards of nursing practice and the role expectations of the Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Unit. The Milieu Counselor is a member of the multidisciplinary team who, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, is responsible for a safe and structured unit milieu as well as attending to the individual needs of patients in crisis in an inpatient psychiatric setting.

The Milieu Counselor/ Nursing Assistant assists with ADL's, lead or co-lead groups, perform safety checks, 1:1 meetings with patients, and charts patients B/P, TPR & weight, as well as helping maintain their nutritional and hydration needs.

The Milieu Counselor/ Nursing Assistant communicates with the nurses of any changes in vital signs and accurately measures and documents patients’ intake and output.

Qualifications/Experience:

• A minimum of a High School diploma or GED required.

• Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association or

• American Red Cross is required. At least one year previous inpatient clinical mental health experience in a behavioral health unit is strongly preferred

• Experience with geriatric and adult psych is highly preferred. All newly hired candidates must successfully complete a job specific physical agility test.
