Job summary

Reading School District is seeking a Middle School Assistant Coach to foster a safe and positive environment, supporting student-athletes in academic and life success. You will work under the Director of Athletics, promoting athletic excellence and community involvement.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in supervision in athletics, recreation, education, or related fields preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a diverse environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise student athletes.
  • Stay current with coaching rules, techniques, schemes, and best practices.
  • Monitor student-athletes to prevent injuries.
  • Place student-athletes in positions to succeed in sport and life.
  • Communicate with staff, officials, and volunteers.
  • Ensure safety measures and proper equipment care.
  • Attend trainings and staff meetings.
  • Work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Verify eligibility under PIAA and Reading School District policies.
  • Secure equipment and facilities after use.
  • Communicate with administration and youth groups to foster participation.

Job description

Position Title: Middle School Assistant Coach
Reports To: Director of Athletics & High School Head Coach
Salary: Stipend (set by coaches pay scale)
Position Goal

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe conditions in accordance with PIAA, league, sports medicine and RSD policies/procedures. Furthermore the candidate will be responsible for assisting student-athletes to establish a life after high school while instilling Red Knight pride, connecting with youth programs, teaching education through athletics, and fundraising.

Qualifications
  • Must be a minimum age of 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferable experience working in a supervision role in athletics, recreation, education, or related fields.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate with adults and students in a diverse work environment.
Essential Functions
  • Supervise student athletes
  • Stay current with current rules, coaching techniques, schemes, and best practices
  • Monitor student-athletes to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Place student-athletes in positions to succeed not only in their sport, but also in life
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills including communication skills with sports medicine staff, game workers, officials, media, students, parents, spectators, and facility staff.
  • Ensures that all possible safety measures are observed, including taking proper care of equipment and proper surveillance of program participants.
  • Attend all training sessions and any additional staff meetings.
  • Work flexible hours including off season training, early mornings, afternoon/evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Verify student-athletes are eligible by PIAA and Reading School District Athletic policies.
  • Secure equipment and facilities after each usage
  • Communicate with RSD admin, safe schools, custodial services and/or RPD as needed.
  • Communicate with youth groups and foster participation growth
  • Be a good role model to student-athletes
  • Support all RSD athletics
Physical Requirements
  • Physically perform all skills required of a coach.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in a crowded athletic facility.
  • Able to withstand extreme weather conditions
  • Able to lift at least 20 pounds.
