Summary: Davidson Day School is a diverse independent school that cultivates academic excellence through collaboration, creativity, and character development. Each student is offered an active, challenging learning environment through our broad array of programs. We have approximately 525 students from 2-year-old through 12 grade and are located in Davidson, North Carolina.
We are seeking a full-time Middle School Social Studies Teacher to join our teaching faculty starting in August 2025. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing the character of middle school students through these transformative years while teaching students to be practicing student-historians and sharing their love for the subject area. The teacher will likely be teaching 5th grade Geography and 8th grade Contemporary World History. Although experience in these areas is a positive, a pedagogical and mission fit for the position is more important. This position will be exempt and report directly to the Head of Middle School.
The School also desires a full-time faculty member who has the skills, experience, and willingness to contribute to the extracurricular and athletic programs at the School.
Essential Functions:
- Develop practicing student-historians through thesis driven writing and critical reading of primary and secondary sources to help students see that “all history is present.”
- Foster a love of history and help students appreciate how stories from the past help shape national and global citizenship for students.
- Develop courses that invite students to explore political, moral, and social challenges while maintaining a commitment to expressive freedom, to nonpartisanship, and to intellectual diversity.
- Balance engaging projects with test preparation and writing development in preparing students for high school and a broader understanding of the world.
- Work collaboratively grades 5-12 departmental members to develop lesson and unit plans which reflect departmental goals and scaffold the skill development of students.
- Support the diverse learning needs of all students and possess an understanding of learning differences.
- Create a caring classroom community through thoughtful and relationships with each student and their family.
- Provide engaging, diverse, and student-centered learning experiences through research-backed practices to engage students and teach critical thinking skills.
- Possess classroom management skills to create an environment in which diverse students can learn and feel intellectually and emotionally safe.
- Engage actively in professional development – individual and school-wide – and bring a growth mindset to furthering knowledge of best educational practices.
- Attend and actively contribute to all divisional, departmental, and school faculty meetings, including professional development days.
- Participate broadly in the life of the school by attending events, chaperoning, supervising, advising, coaching, and sponsoring clubs.
- Assist with all duties (i.e. morning meeting, lunch, class trips, and carpool).
- Perform all other duties appropriate to employment as determined by the Head of School.
- Comply with all rules and regulations established as school policy.
Required Education and Experience:- 3-5 years of experience teaching at the middle school grade level is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with children, parents, and colleagues.
