Job summary

South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) is seeking a Sign Language Activity Specialist for our middle school program in Ozone Park. This part-time, in-person role supports a school-year schedule September through June, with potential for summer rehiring.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or current college student preferred; high school diploma required.
• 2 years of academic preparation in visual arts or equivalent training.
• Knowledge of youth development, after-school and public education.
• Ability to collaborate and manage multiple priorities and people.
• Experience with individualized and group instruction for youth.
• Experience designing and teaching youth-centered courses.
• Knowledge of painting/drawing techniques: charcoal, pencil, watercolor, acrylic, oil.
• Enthusiasm for professional skill development through training.
• Compliance with SACC requirements including background check.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants.
• Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate activities and themes that will support social-emotional learning and creativity.
• Facilitate activities that foster new skills in youth in an engaging way.
• Manage classroom and maintain positive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with youth and adults and model professional conduct.
• Ensure proper care of spaces and materials, report misuse or damage.
• Submit program reports (supply requests, lesson plans, incidents, attendance, timesheets).
• Assist with ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.
• Participate in training sessions, meetings and events.
