Job Description

Uncommon Middle School Science teachers work in grade-level teams to prepare all students with the tools and knowledge to critically engage in the field of science. At the heart of all Science courses is a love for the subject and inquiry-based learning, including a robust focus on student discourse and the science practices. Science teachers employ a variety of instructional strategies to develop a passion for scientific questioning and analysis in their students. Our teachers strive for subject mastery and have a keen sense of the socio-emotional changes middle schoolers experience. At the conclusion of eighth grade, students are prepared for the academic autonomy and college preparatory focus of our high schools.

Responsibilities

  1. Instruction
  2. Teach an interdisciplinary, NGSS-aligned curriculum covering key areas such as Climate and Earth’s systems, the cosmos, matter and energy transformations, electricity and magnetism, and molecular and ecological systems.
  3. Develop students’ skills in questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive labs.
  4. Foster confidence and engagement with science, leveraging your passion for the subject.
  5. Cultivate awareness of the interconnectedness of scientific fields and their relation to local and global communities.
  6. Data Analysis
  7. Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work and assessments.
  8. Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners.
  9. School Culture
  10. Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  11. Partner with families to support student learning needs.
  12. Engage in professional development, mentorship, and coaching.
  13. Participate in weekly school meetings to foster community and uphold core values.
  14. Collaborate with your team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with partners in students' best interests.
  • Self-directed learner who seeks and applies feedback.
  • Experience in impacting K-12 students in urban schools (1-2 years preferred).
  • Expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; NJ certification is not required initially but must be pursued post-employment, with GPA requirements as specified.
