Job summary

Berkley School District in Oakland is seeking a creative Robotics Coach to lead the middle school FIRST Robotics Club for 6th–8th graders at Anderson and Norup International. This after-school role invites educators, students, or mentors to help students build technical skills, confidence, and teamwork through real-world challenges.

Qualifications

• Enthusiasm for working with students and a commitment to student growth and empowerment.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Comfort with tools and a general understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
• Familiarity with programming (Java preferred), CAD or design tools, 3D printing, or CNC (preferred but not required).
• Experience with FIRST Robotics or similar programs is a plus.
• Ability to lift and move equipment (up to 50 lbs), attend competitions, and supervise students in various settings.
• Must pass all school/district background checks.

Responsibilities

• Serve as coach and mentor to middle school robotics students.
• Coordinate and facilitate afterschool build sessions and team meetings.
• Guide students through engineering design, programming, project management, and problem-solving.
• Promote student leadership and collaboration.
• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students.
• Communicate with students, families, school staff, and FIRST representatives.
• Supervise and support the team at local competitions.
• Manage administrative tasks, including registration, budgeting, and equipment planning.
