Overview
The Middle School Math / Advanced ELA Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality instruction in mathematics and/or advanced English Language Arts to middle school students. The teacher creates a challenging, engaging, and supportive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and student growth.
The teacher is responsible for differentiating instruction to meet a wide range of student needs while providing appropriately rigorous instruction for students enrolled in advanced or accelerated coursework. The teacher collaborates with colleagues, families, and support staff to support student success and contributes positively to the school community.
Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver standards-aligned instruction in middle school mathematics and/or Advanced English Language Arts.
- Provide rigorous, appropriately challenging instruction that prepares students for continued academic success at the high school level.
- Develop and implement engaging daily lessons that incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, learning activities, and appropriate technology.
- Differentiate instruction based on student readiness, learning needs, interests, and performance data.
- Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Teach advanced students to analyze, evaluate, synthesize, problem-solve, and apply knowledge at a higher level.
- In mathematics, develop students' conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations.
- In Advanced ELA, develop students' reading comprehension, literary and informational text analysis, writing, vocabulary, grammar, research, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
- Monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments and use assessment data to adjust instruction.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of student grades, attendance, assessment results, and other required documentation.
- Provide timely and meaningful feedback to students regarding academic progress and areas for improvement.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and accomplishments.
- Collaborate with grade-level teams, department members, intervention specialists, counselors, administrators, and other staff to support student achievement.
- Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), team meetings, professional development, and other collaborative activities.
- Support students in developing organizational, study, communication, and self-advocacy skills.
- Maintain high academic expectations while providing appropriate support to students who need additional assistance.
- Implement accommodations and modifications as required by student IEPs, 504 Plans, and other applicable student support plans.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.
- Establish and maintain appropriate classroom management procedures and address student behavior in accordance with district and building expectations.
- Supervise students and maintain a safe and orderly classroom and school environment.
- Maintain professional knowledge and skills through ongoing professional development and current educational practices.
- Follow all Board of Education policies, administrative guidelines, building procedures, and applicable state and federal laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.
Qualifications Required and Preferred
Required:
- Valid Ohio teaching license appropriate for the assigned grade level and subject area(s).
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated knowledge of middle school instructional practices, curriculum, and assessment.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a professional team.
- Demonstrated commitment to student achievement and academic growth.
- Successful completion of required background checks and other employment requirements.
Preferred:
- Master's degree or advanced coursework in education, mathematics, English Language Arts, curriculum, or a related field.
- Experience teaching advanced, accelerated, honors, gifted, or other academically rigorous coursework.
- Experience teaching at the middle school level.
- Experience using student achievement data to inform instruction.
- Experience integrating technology into instruction.
- Training or experience in gifted education, differentiation, or advanced learning strategies.
- Experience working within a Professional Learning Community (PLC) or collaborative team environment.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, and move throughout the classroom and school building for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move classroom materials and supplies.
- Ability to operate standard classroom and office equipment, including computers and other instructional technology.
- Ability to visually and audibly monitor students and respond appropriately to classroom and school situations.
- Ability to perform duties in a classroom environment that may involve frequent interaction with students and varying noise levels.

Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed in a middle school classroom and school environment.
- Regular interaction with students, staff, parents/guardians, and administrators is required.
- Work may involve varying levels of noise, frequent movement, and the need to respond to changing student and classroom needs.
- Occasional evening or extended-day responsibilities may be required for meetings, professional development, conferences, school events, or other district activities.
- The position requires maintaining a professional, respectful, and supportive learning environment at all times.
- Duties may require working beyond the regular student school day to complete planning, grading, meetings, professional development, and other responsibilities.
- Other duties may be assigned by the building principal or designee.
