William Penn Charter School is a Quaker, all-gender, pre-K-12 independent, day school in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. Position Summary

We seek a long-term Middle School English substitute teacher from late August 2025 to January 2026. Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in English or a related field (advanced degree preferred) and prior teaching experience, especially at the middle school level. The ideal candidate will utilize student-centered pedagogy and technology, demonstrate curiosity and a growth mindset, and build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families. Familiarity with Quaker principles is highly desirable. The role involves following our shared curriculum with some autonomy, contributing to our PK-12 English program.

Essential Functions

  • Commit to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in teaching and relationships
  • Teach four Middle School English classes
  • Serve as an advisor to a cohort of students
  • Attend meetings, provide comments, and report grades on schedule
  • Perform duties such as proctoring and chaperoning as assigned
  • Use the HUB LMS for assignments, assessments, and grade updates
  • Participate in professional development and faculty observations
  • Collaborate on lesson and assessment design
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Experience with student-centered English curriculum, including analytical writing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Quaker principles and education
  • Teaching certification (preferred)
  • Master’s Degree in English education or similar
