Job summary

Great Hearts Academies seeks a Middle School English and History Teacher for the Harveston Upper School in Baton Rouge, LA. The role focuses on humane letters, classical liberal arts, and rigorous discussion-based instruction in a life-long learning environment.

Responsibilities include delivering Great Hearts curriculum, supporting students academically, and maintaining a positive classroom culture aligned with the academy’s values.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or higher degree is required for a lead teaching role.
  • Certification is not required for general education roles.
  • Candidates must pass a fingerprint background clearance.
  • All majors are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned classes using the Great Hearts curriculum and materials, preparing thoughtful lessons and cultivating an orderly, joyful classroom that supports the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.
  • Provide appropriate academic support to students, monitor progress, and partner with school leadership to address academic or behavioral needs in a timely manner.
  • Uphold and model the culture, policies, and expectations of Great Hearts, including dress code, conduct, and safety procedures, contributing to a respectful and orderly school environment.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with families, initiating conferences as needed and fostering strong home-school partnerships.
  • Participate fully in the life of the academy through faculty collaboration, school events, assigned duties, and a shared commitment to ongoing professional growth and excellence in teaching.

Position: Middle School English and History Teacher

Location: Great Hearts Harveston Upper School (11801 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810)

Humane Letters at Great Hearts
  • The Humane Letters courses are central to the academies' classical liberal arts curricula. Humane Letters courses are two-hour seminar style courses focusing on great works of literature, history, and philosophy from the Western Tradition.

  • Socratic approach and seminar style discussions in the classrooms.
Our academies offer the following courses as a part of their curricula

  • Humane Letters III (focused on Ancient Greek/Roman studies with a strong philosophycomponent- 11th grade)
  • Humane Letters IV (a capstone course surveying the Western tradition with a strong philosophycomponent- 12th grade)
