Job description

Falk Laboratory School, a coeducational K-8 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks a full-time Middle School Division Director. The Division Director is the academic and administrative leader of the Middle School division and is responsible for working with students, parents, faculty, staff, curriculum, and program. This is a 12-month position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Instructional Management
    • Monitor curricular content, classroom practices, and pedagogical approaches to ensure program activities align with Falk's mission, vision, and values as an inquiry-based, constructivist, progressive laboratory school for grades 6-8.
    • Provide instructional resources, materials, and feedback to support faculty in delivering instruction consistent with Falk's educational philosophy.
  2. Team Supervision and Leadership
    • Foster collegiality and team building among faculty and staff, encouraging involvement in decision-making.
    • Serve as a liaison between the middle school division and the broader community, including Falk, SOE, and the University of Pittsburgh.
    • Communicate expectations for high performance, recognize achievements, and resolve conflicts effectively.
  3. School Strategy
    • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop a shared vision for school improvement, overseeing activities that promote Falk's educational mission.
    • Apply research findings to promote school development.
  4. Faculty Recruitment, Retention & Growth
    • Chair search committees for teaching vacancies and orient new faculty.
    • Set goals for professional development and instructional improvement.
    • Observe and evaluate teachers, and make retention recommendations.
    • Plan professional development activities and faculty meetings.
    • Stay informed about relevant collective bargaining agreements.
  5. Student and Family Concerns
    • Develop student discipline systems aligned with Falk's ethos.
    • Ensure discipline is appropriate and equitable, following policies and codes.
    • Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers on school issues.
  6. School and Community Relations
    • Articulate and promote the school's mission and values.
    • Address community needs through activities and communications.
    • Assist with admissions tours and participate in outreach events.
  7. Professional/Personal Demeanor, Growth
    • Develop professional skills appropriate for a senior leadership role.
    • Exhibit professional, ethical behavior and serve as a role model.
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills for leading meetings.
  8. Additional
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress; work irregular hours and be available for crises. Move around the school as needed.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in education.
  • At least 9 years of classroom experience; administrative leadership preferred.
  • Experience working with middle school students preferred.
