The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine in Manhattan's Morningside Heights seeks an Upper School Debate Coach to lead the Middle School Debate program and foster a supportive, equitable classroom culture.

This hourly, in-person role begins Fall 2026. Candidates should have prior debate coaching or teaching experience with middle school students; a high school diploma or GED is required, bachelor’s degree preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have experience as a debate teacher or coach with middle school students.
• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Commitment to equity and justice in curriculum and school culture.

Responsibilities

• Foster a healthy and supportive team environment.
• Oversee all aspects of the Middle School Debate program.
• Develop and execute practice plans for weekly meetings.
• Chaperone and coach students at debate tournaments.
• Collaborate with the Upper School leadership team to provide students with individualized help and support, including maintaining consistent behavioral expectations.
• Communicate regularly with parents.
• Organize weekend debate trips, including overseeing logistics, transportation, and securing chaperones.
