Job summary

The Nueva School seeks a Debate Assistant Coach to support our nationally recognized speech and debate program by coaching students in research, public speaking, critical thinking, and competitive debate. The role leads practices, attends tournaments, and provides individualized feedback in an inclusive learning environment.

Ideal candidates have experience competing or coaching debate, strong communication, flexibility, and a commitment to Nueva’s mission and values.

Qualifications

Meets at least one: two+ years of competitive debate experience or one+ year of coaching experience in debate formats (Parliamentary, Public Forum, World Schools, Lincoln-Douglas, or Policy).
Virtual or in-person availability on Tue/Thu afternoons.
Demonstrable record of appropriate interactions with minors in extracurricular settings.

Responsibilities

Coaching and Practice Support: Attend after-school debates and lead teaching breakouts or judge practice rounds; assist with practice planning or curriculum for subgroups.
Student Support and Collaboration: Schedule office hours with students for tournaments; review/edit student research and case materials.
Tournament Coaching and Supervision: Attend tournaments, provide judging/coaching, scout opponents, and supervise travel activities as needed.
Personal and Professional Development: Complete trainings; participate in equity and inclusion discussions.
