Job description

Company Description

Pharos Academy Charter School is a K-12 urban public education institution that prepares Bronx students for success in college and the innovation economy.

**This position has a January 2025 start date**

Teacher Vision
Pharos Academy Charter School is looking for a teacher who is an “uber” kid person. The ideal candidate absolutely loves to teach, train, and push students both academically as well as behaviorally. There is an understanding that messing up and failure is a natural and welcomed part of the learning process. In this teacher’s classroom, all students are treated with dignity at all times and students are taught non-academic skills like hard work, collaboration, kindness, and receiving feedback.

In addition to being a kid person, the ideal candidate has a penchant for planning, preparation, using data, and being pushed to excellence. This teacher understands that what happens before students enter the classroom (intellectual preparation) drives what happens in the classroom and ultimately determines student achievement and success levels.

What We Are Looking For

  1. Commitment to daily and long-term instructional planning and preparation to ensure students get the most out of each class.
  2. Commitment and drive to constantly learn and improve practice through implementing feedback from instructional leadership, peers, parents, and students to better serve and meet the needs of all students.
  3. Commitment to using data to improve short term and long-term student achievement goals.
  4. Full accountability for student academic outcomes and classroom culture and a steadfast belief that all students can achieve.
  5. Commitment to being a team player (crew member) and belief in Pharos Academy’s core beliefs and educational viewpoint.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Plan and implement engaging and effective computer science lessons for middle school students (grades 6-8).
  2. Evaluate student progress and provide regular feedback to students and parents.
  3. Stay current with developments in computer science education and technology, and integrate these into the classroom.
  4. Engage students in hands-on, project-based learning opportunities to deepen their understanding and application of computer science concepts and AI.

What We Offer You

  1. Competitive salary with yearly increase (based on performance driving student outcomes). Starting salary for new teachers begins at $80,000*
  2. $500/mo Rent Stipend offered for teachers who relocate to the Bronx.
  3. 401k plan with employer matching of 5%.
  4. Comprehensive benefits package - Medical/Dental/Vision.
  5. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to further support employees.
  6. Classrooms fully stocked with 1:1 technology and all essential classroom supplies.

*Entry salary range for this position is $80,000 - $85,000. Compensation is based on years of experience as well as performance metrics. Click HERE to learn more.

How We Support Growth & Development

  1. Weekly one-on-one instructional coaching.
  2. Weekly school-wide or departmentalized professional development.
  3. Summer Professional Development Institute.
  4. New & Emerging Teacher Training.

Expected Teacher Performance Outcomes

  1. At minimum, 75% of all students will reach proficiency (score of 65% or higher) in Computer Science as measured by internal interim assessments.
  2. At minimum, 33% of all students will exceed proficiency (score of 85% or higher) in Computer Science as measured by internal assessments.
  3. Teacher will score proficient in classroom management and youth development as measured by student referral numbers, suspensions, and internal measurement tools.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or secondary education related field of study.
  2. Strong knowledge of foundational computer science concepts and programming languages (Understanding of Python & JavaScript required).
  3. Experience working with school-aged children in an academic or youth development setting required.
  4. At least 1 year of experience teaching computer science at the middle or high school level required.
