You will work with the Head Coach to implement a positive, competitive, and student-centered program, focusing on practice planning, player development, and a smooth transition to high school basketball.

Qualifications

Salary: Based on the 2026–27 Extra Duty Schedule (Tier 2 @ up to 5%, based on experience)

Summary

Fort Lupton Middle School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Boys Basketball Coach for the upcoming school year. The ideal candidate has previous basketball coaching and/or playing experience, demonstrates a passion for teaching the game, and is committed to helping middle school student-athletes develop both on and off the court.

The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Middle School Head Basketball Coach to ensure consistency, continuity, and the overall development of student-athletes while supporting a positive, competitive, and student-centered basketball program.

This position will assist with the implementation of the program's philosophy, expectations, practice plans, player development, and game preparation. The Assistant Coach will collaborate with athletes, families, school staff, the athletic department, and the high school basketball program to help provide a positive experience and prepare student-athletes for continued participation at the high school level

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Coach with planning and conducting practices, games, and team activities.
  • Support the overall vision, expectations, and philosophy established for the Fort Lupton basketball program.
  • Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals, rules, terminology, offensive and defensive concepts, and proper skill progression.
  • Provide positive instruction and constructive feedback that encourages growth, confidence, and skill development.
  • Assist the Head Coach with individual and team goal setting throughout the season.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship, effort, discipline, and school pride.
  • Foster an inclusive environment where all student-athletes have opportunities to learn, compete, and develop.
  • Support alignment between the middle school and high school basketball programs to help create a consistent developmental pathway for student-athletes.
  • Teach fundamental basketball skills, including ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, footwork, defense, and team concepts.
  • Develop student-athletes' basketball IQ, decision-making, leadership skills, work ethic, and character.
  • Teach age-appropriate offensive and defensive concepts and game strategies.
  • Prepare student-athletes for advancement within the Fort Lupton basketball program.
  • Provide regular instruction, mentorship, and constructive feedback to support individual improvement.
  • Encourage academic achievement, responsibility, attendance, sportsmanship, and positive decision-making.
  • Assist with offseason skill development opportunities, camps, open gyms, strength and conditioning, and other approved program activities.
  • Encourage student-athlete retention and continued participation in the Fort Lupton basketball program.
Communication & Relationship
  • Maintain positive and professional communication with the Head Coach, student-athletes, families, teachers, school administrators, athletic department, and other coaching staff.
  • Support appropriate and timely communication regarding practices, games, transportation, expectations, and program activities.
  • Assist in monitoring player attendance, eligibility, academic standing, and behavior in collaboration with the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
  • Promote positive relationships between the basketball program, school, families, and community.
  • Support all district policies regarding student supervision, transportation, communication, and student‑athlete welfare.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and model appropriate behavior when interacting with student-athletes.
Safety & Supervision
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Teach and reinforce proper basketball techniques, conditioning practices, and injury-prevention strategies.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, locker room activities, team events, and approved offseason activities.
  • Ensure student-athletes are appropriately supervised before, during, and after practices and competitions.
  • Respond appropriately to injuries and emergencies while following district safety procedures and emergency action plans.
  • Promote proper sportsmanship and uphold high standards of conduct on and off the court.
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and organized practice and competition environment.
Qualifications
  • Previous coaching and/or playing experience in basketball is preferred.
  • Experience working with middle school-aged students is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, offensive and defensive concepts, player development, and age-appropriate coaching techniques.
  • Ability to teach fundamental skills to student-athletes with varying levels of experience and ability.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the coaching staff and athletic department.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for middle school student-athletes.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or willing to obtain certification prior to the season.
  • Must pass all required background checks.
  • Must complete all Weld Re-8 School District and athletic department required training.
  • Must review and sign theWeld Re-8 Coaches' Manual and comply with all district, league, and applicable governing-body requirements.
Additional Expectations
  • Be available for after-school practices, games, tournaments, summer opportunities, and occasional weekend activities as required.
  • Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development opportunities, preseason orientations, parent meetings, and basketball program events.
  • Meet regularly with the Head Coach during the season and, when appropriate, during the offseason to support program planning and player development.
  • Actively support student-athletes academically, socially, athletically, and personally.
  • Assist with equipment and uniform management, inventory, gym setup and cleanup, scorekeeping/game-day preparation, and other operational responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate equipment and uniform inventories and ensuring school-issued equipment is properly cared for and returned.
  • Support the Head Coach and Athletic Director in implementing all school, district, and athletic department expectations.
  • Represent Fort Lupton Middle School and Weld Re-8 School District professionally at all times.
