The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) seeks a full-time Middle East Security Program Researcher to conduct open-source analysis of geo-strategic dynamics in the Middle East and their implications for U.S. national security.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to ISW’s core mission; master’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of written and spoken Arabic.
  • Strong understanding of Middle Eastern political dynamics and military operations; knowledge of military history helpful.
  • Exceptional writing skills and independent research ability; good initiative and collaboration.
  • Outstanding briefing and presentation skills; experience briefing senior decision makers.
  • Qualitative and analytic skills; ability to present material graphically; some familiarity with quantitative methods; comfortable with technology.
  • Experience dealing with media is preferred.
  • Dedication to producing policy-relevant research in a timely manner.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for ISW’s research agenda and mission.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert analysis on dynamic conflicts within the Middle East by synthesizing open-source information.
  • Capture and analyze granular information on developments, including regional dynamics implications.
  • Collaborate with teams studying China and Russia to generate cross-border insights.
  • Keep policymakers informed about ground situations, inflection points, and policy options.
  • Develop proficiency in data-driven analytic software to support investigations.
  • Publish findings through timely written and graphical reports and oral briefings.
  • Provide synthetic research support to long-term projects and forecasts.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage research interns and collaborate with team members.
  • Help edit and oversee daily and short-form intelligence products to ensure adherence to writing standards.
  • Validate compliance with proper data handling and storage guidelines.
