Director of Academics at the Academy at SOAR
About Us : The Academy at SOAR is an accredited adventure-based private boarding school in Western North Carolina's mountains. We serve youth with ADHD and other learning differences in grades 7-12. The School operates on a 4-week cycle: two weeks on campus and two weeks traveling. The Academy at SOAR offers an alternative learning environment that combines academics, adventure, and life skill development to help prepare our students academically, socially, and emotionally for adulthood.
Specific Science classes offered at the Academy at SOAR include:
- Middle School Earth and Life Science
- Middle School Chemistry and Physical Science
- Biology
- Physics
Responsibilities include:
- Teach with a 1:8 teacher-to-student ratio.
- Plan a differentiated academic curriculum for students based on strengths and needs, course requirements, North Carolina-approved course standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Common Core Curriculum.
- Plan individual and group lessons for student academic expeditions in a format suitable for Field Instructors to implement. Assist Field Instructors with plans and implementation strategies as necessary.
- Communicate student progress with caregivers. Provide written feedback on students’ learning goals, methods utilized, and recommendations for future success in academic environments.
- Serve as an Academic Advisor to students, including communication of progress to students and caregivers during their campus phases and three conferences per year.
- Facilitate student learning, college preparation, and other education-related tasks.
- Potentially participate in the yearly all-school city trip.
- Follow a suspense list of duties provided at the beginning of each year, which is updated at the end of each semester to include midterm and final grades per semester.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings.
- Participate in a monthly Academic team meeting.
Requirements for all Academy Teaching positions include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or the subject areas of secondary English, Mathematics, History, or upper-level Sciences with a state teacher’s licensure in the specified areas.
OR
- Bachelor’s degree, relevant career experience, and the willingness to pursue state certification in the area taught.
AND
- Experience in the challenges of adolescents with ADHD, learning differences, and understanding their group dynamics.

- Utilize behavior management techniques consistent with the Academy's program philosophies and research-based best practices.
- Develop a warm, inviting, yet structured setting where students experience success and become accountable for their decisions and actions.
- Maintain current records of student progress and document strategies utilized throughout the year for caregivers and each student.
- Promote a learning atmosphere conducive to holistic growth, including self-esteem and life skills.
- Act professionally to promote the Academy at SOAR, SOAR Inc., and the profession.
- Develop an appropriate setting in which the student may learn from example.
