ResponsibilitiesWhat you'll be challenged to do:
Gannet Fleming TranSystems is seeking a Senior Rail Project Civil Design Engineer to support our Midwest Area on a variety of design and planning projects with an emphasis on Rail design. This position is with our Midwest Design Team and can be located in one of the following TranSystems office locations: Omaha, NE; Kansas City, MO; St. Louis, MO; Houston, TX; Dallas, TX; Austin, TX; or Fort Worth, TX. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to understand the application of engineering fundamentals on transportation engineering design projects for a variety of clients, particularly states, municipalities, and railroads. A candidate for this position should have strong listening and communication skills with the ability to perform design tasks and develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates that relay a clear message. Additionally, the ideal candidate is someone who is motivated, eager to learn, a team player, and takes pride in their work. The primary types of projects the candidate will be assigned include freight and passenger linear railway design, industry facility rail design, and grading and drainage design. The opportunity to assist in other disciplines, as needed, is likely to include hydrology and hydraulics, highway design, traffic control, and site grading.
Primary Responsibilities (others may be included):
- Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.
- Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods.
- Represent the organization design team in meetings to resolve project related questions, and to plan and coordinate work.
- Support Project Managers or Senior Project Engineers to achieve client expectations.
- Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and deliverables; quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
- Research appropriate design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineer.
- Prepare plans, specifications, quantities and cost estimates for the design of various projects.
- Solve engineering problems and pay attention to detail.
- Keep Project Manager informed of design status and any changes in project schedule, scope, or required effort.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Perform in a team environment with both design engineers and CAD technicians; ask questions, share knowledge, and mentor less experienced staff as needed.
QualificationsWhat you bring to our firm:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- 8-15 years of relevant experience.
- Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with 4-8 years of design experience.
- Knowledge of the Bentley MicroStation/Open Roads/Rail Designer software.
- Ability to learn and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:
- Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- Knowledge of the AREMA Design Manual.
- Experience with BNSF, UPRR, CPKC and/or local shippers.
- Project management experience.
