Job description

Tired of getting pigeonholed into a single role at a massive firm?

Discover what it’s like to make a real, tangible impact at Varela.

Cradle-to-Grave Engineering: Gain hands-on experience across the entire lifecycle of water, wastewater, and transportation projects—including funding assistance, planning, design, construction management, and operations.

Meaningful Work: See the direct results of your projects in communities that truly need and appreciate them.

Culture & Balance: Enjoy a supportive, family-oriented work atmosphere with a genuine commitment to work/life balance and a great office location.

About Us:

Varela Engineering and Management is a Spokane-based company committed to the communities we serve in Eastern Washington. In an era where small engineering firms are succumbing to buy-outs and consolidation by private equity investment firms, we take pride in our commitment to maintain our independence and keep all the decision making right here with the people you work with. As a colleague from a recently-acquired engineering firm told us, “We used to be an engineering company trying to profit; now we’re a profit-driven company trying to engineer.” At Varela, we do engineering. Our owners are engineers and project managers, not investors. We don’t see employees as profit‑producing widgets. We value individual growth and want our engineers to work within multiple disciplines from project to project. Because we value relationships, we enjoy working with each other and with our clients for the long-term.

Position Overview:

We are currently seeking mid-level civil engineers to join our team. We have open positions for engineers specializing in drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and transportation infrastructure. We always watch for outstanding people to join our team. Some exceptional team members came along unexpectedly when we weren't even looking. At Varela, we understand that every engineer has unique interests. Here, we try not to confine team members to a single specialty; instead, most team members contribute to projects based on their passion and expertise.

Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the design and execution of civil engineering infrastructure projects (drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, transportation) for municipalities and special‑purpose districts in eastern Washington.
  • Collaborate with Varela team members, City Staff (clients), and contractors to deliver exceptional infrastructure projects.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • PE license preferred, but not necessarily required.
  • Mid-level engineering experience (roughly 10-20 years of work experience) with a focus on municipal infrastructure planning, design, and construction. Project management experience a plus.
Why Join Varela Engineering and Management:
  • Family-oriented work environment.
  • Focus on client relationships and technical excellence over corporate profit.
  • Opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects in generally rural communities.
Salary Range and Benefits:
  • Depending on experience, annual salary will range from $105k to $130k.
  • Annual performance-based bonuses.
  • Retirement account contribution matching for 3% of salary.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance fully paid for employee; partially paid for family members.
  • Paid vacation and sick leave.
