Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Chicago, IL is seeking a civil engineer with 4+ years of design experience to support power project development and infrastructure reviews.

You will assist with site grading, drainage, road design, and prepare specifications, collaborating with senior consultants to advise developers and financiers. A Bachelor's in Civil Engineering is required; Master’s or PE is a plus; proficiency in Civil 3D and other tools is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required.
  • Master’s in civil/structural engineering or MBA is a plus.
  • 4+ years of design experience in technical plans, drawings, calculations, and models.
  • 2+ years of detailed design experience in site grading, drainage, storm sewer systems, road design, transport plans, and ponds.
  • Power plant design experience in combined cycle, simple cycle, nuclear, wind, or solar projects.
  • Experience writing and supporting civil engineering specifications or calculations.
  • Team-oriented with ability to prioritize multiple fast-paced tasks within schedule and budget.

Overview

SLC works on behalf of clients to support utility‑scale thermal, solar, wind, battery energy storage and other power generating and infrastructure projects. We evaluate and optimize technical, commercial, environmental, and financial aspects of the projects for a variety of clients.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with civil engineering reviews, including storm water drainage, sanitary sewer systems, road design, and earthwork.
  • Support preparation and review of site layout, grading, and preliminary drainage designs.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications to define construction requirements.
  • Work with senior consultants to advise power project developers.

Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical evaluation report writing.
  • Proficient in civil engineering software such as Civil 3D, StormCAD, PondPack, Microstation or AutoCAD, and geospatial tools.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Data analysis and visualization.
  • Project finance or business acumen.
  • Conceptual project design.
  • Construction project management and/or scheduling software knowledge.

AI & Automation
  • Lead others in using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost‑effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process‑improvement work, guiding teams on AI tool use while ensuring results are checked.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script (Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, reviewing automated outputs.
  • Value additional learning (minor, certificate, or experience) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields to oversee automation and AI‑enabled engineering workflows.
