Job description

ATC is seeking a talented and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Advanced Solutions Group. This team designs and delivers innovative sensing systems for space, airborne, and terrestrial applications.

In this role you will contribute to the design, development, integration, and deployment of advanced sensing aerospace systems, while providing technical direction across programs. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and have opportunities to mentor junior engineers, influence system architectures, and take ownership of critical mechanical subsystems throughout the product lifecycle.

What You'll Do
  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures for mission-critical sensors operating in demanding aerospace and defense environments
  • Collaborate with Systems, Electrical, RF, and Firmware engineers to design custom, high-density electronics systems
  • Perform structural, dynamic, stress, and thermal analyses to validate designs against mission environmental requirements
  • Contribute to system-level performance analyses, packaging, tolerance stack-ups, and reliability assessments
  • Support architecture definition, mechanical design reviews, and technical trade studies
  • Provide support for mechanical integration, testing, environmental qualification, verification, and operational activities
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to early-career engineers
  • Participate in proposal development, technology road mapping, and new-product initiatives as opportunities arise
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5-10+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability applications operating in challenging vibration and thermal environments
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks, Creo, or NX) for design and detailing of precision mechanical hardware
  • Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis, and manufacturing/assembly drawing standards
  • Hands-on experience supporting design reviews, build, integration, and test activities to support reliable hardware development and delivery
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Mechanical system architecture and design for sensor or optical payloads
  • Vibration and shock analysis for space launch and airborne environments
  • Thermal management design and analysis of high-density electronics systems
  • Experience with structural, dynamic, and thermal analysis tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, or SINDA/Thermal Desktop
  • Materials selection for aerospace applications (aluminum, titanium, composites)
  • Environmental test methods and equipment, such as vibration tables, thermal chambers, and shock test rigs
  • Technical leadership or team mentoring experience
Leadership & Growth Opportunities

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy remaining hands-on while expanding their technical leadership responsibilities. You will have opportunities to:

  • Take responsibility for major mechanical subsystems from concept through deployment
  • Influence system architectures and technology selections
  • Lead small technical teams and development efforts
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers
  • Grow toward Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, or Engineering Management roles
Eligibility Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain a Top Secret U.S. Government security clearance.
