Job summary

TEGNA Inc. is seeking a software engineer to build and maintain backend services in C#/.NET, focusing on Azure Functions and microservices for content management and streaming support in a hybrid cloud environment.

You will implement event-driven workflows using Azure Service Bus, design RESTful APIs, and work in an Agile/Scrum team with Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform. Production operations, testing, and code reviews are part of the role.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years professional software engineering building backend services.
  • Proficiency in C#/.NET; Azure Functions a plus.
  • Understanding of RESTful API design and basic distributed-systems concepts.
  • Exposure to messaging patterns (Service Bus, queues, pub/sub).
  • Cloud-native development (Azure/AWS); hybrid stack.

Responsibilities

  • Build, test, and maintain C#/.NET microservices, primarily as Azure Function Apps, across content management and streaming-support domains.
  • Implement event-driven workflows using Azure Service Bus and other messaging patterns.
  • Develop and consume RESTful APIs, and contribute to containerized, cloud-agnostic services running on Kubernetes.
  • Turn stories and epics into working implementation, and participate in design discussions, code reviews, and testing.
  • Help operate services in production: monitoring, troubleshooting, and addressing performance and reliability issues.
  • Work cloud-native across our Azure/AWS environment, following the infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices set by the cloud team and Cloud Architect.
  • Collaborate in an Agile/Scrum team with disciplined source control: clear branching, pull requests, and code review.

Job description

TEGNA Inc. helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.

Responsibilities
  • Build, test, and maintain C#/.NET microservices, primarily as Azure Function Apps, across the content management and streaming-support domains.
Requirements
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend services (or equivalent strong fundamentals).
  • Working proficiency in C#/.NET; experience with serverless/Azure Functions is a plus.
  • Understanding of RESTful API design and basic distributed-systems concepts.
  • Exposure to messaging or event-driven patterns (Service Bus, queues, pub/sub) is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native development (Azure and/or AWS) — not solely on-premises systems — is valued; eagerness to grow into our hybrid stack.
  • Comfortable working in an Agile/Scrum team with Git-based source control at a team level.
  • Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or Terraform, and a habit of writing tests, are pluses.
  • Media, streaming, or high-traffic platform experience is a plus.
Why Join TEGNA?

You’ll build modern digital products at real scale, learning cloud-native and event-driven development in a supportive, forward-thinking engineering organization. You’ll work alongside senior engineers and architects and contribute to the services that power content management and streaming delivery across all of TEGNA's media properties. We are investing heavily in AI-assisted development, modern cloud-native services, and flexible architecture patterns that let our teams innovate quickly while delivering high-quality, high-impact products.

  • Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.
  • Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
  • TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
  • * Some jobs are covered by a collective bargaining agreement and thus some or all of the benefits described herein may not apply. For example, some newsroom bargaining unit employees receive health and retirement benefits under plans administered by the union.
