Our services include screening for diseases of public health interest, reference support for confirmation of low incidence infectious agents, laboratory investigation to determine epidemiological patterns, and oversight of the state’s alcohol breath testing program.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Microbiology Supervisor 1 to manage the development and implementation of whole genome sequencing for the Lab. This position requires thorough knowledge of microbiology, microbiological laboratory techniques and testing procedures, and supervisory principles/techniques in order to provide daily supervision of laboratory scientists assigned to the section. The Microbiology Supervisor 1 will be responsible for overseeing the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical activities of the sequencing section. The laboratory sequences the following public health priorities:

• SARS-CoV-2
• Bacterial foodborne illness (i.e., Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes )
• Antimicrobial-resistant hospital-acquired pathogens (i.e., Klebsiella, Acinetobacter)
• Influenza
• Cryptosporidium
• Measles
• Streptococcal pathogens
• Mycobacterium tuberculosis
• Newborn Screening

Additional Duties include:

• Attend scheduled section meetings
• Keep abreast of recent developments in the field
• Maintain continuous professional contact with physicians, laboratories, hospitals, clinics, and local health departments (LHDs) concerning tests performed and their results
• As assigned, work in other areas of Microbiology as work priorities and outbreak situations develop
• Assist with outreach to outside laboratories, academic institutions, and other partners to develop relationships and networks to support personnel development
• Leads development of section's specific response to federal grant opportunities, facilitating, monitoring, and reporting on progress of grant workplans

Unusual Working Conditions

Candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives; may work varying hours and must be able to provide own transportation.

VACCINATED: Proof of Hepatitis-B vaccination due before first day of work (do NOT provide, until directed to do so)

NOT VACCINATED: Qualified candidates NOT yet fully vaccinated for Hepatitis-B must be able & willing to receive the vaccination. We can provide it at no cost (post-hire) and temporarily limit your work duties to prevent exposure.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 13, Step 1 (EXEMPT) Pay Range Schedule ($36.75 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($38.75 per hour) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
