Job summary

The City of New York Department of Environmental Protection seeks an Associate Laboratory Microbiologist to oversee the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program for the Newtown Creek Microbiology lab. The role focuses on data defensibility, regulatory compliance, and quality document maintenance.

You will draft and revise standard operating procedures and quality manuals, help coordinate audits, and support daily lab operations and staff training in a busy municipal facility.

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and 1 year of laboratory experience.
• 90 college credits with chemistry and biology courses plus 1 year of laboratory experience.
• Knowledge of relevant analytical/regulatory standards and quality systems.
• Ability to write, review and revise SOPs, quality documents and manuals.

Responsibilities

• Oversee Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) of the Newtown Creek Microbiology lab.
• Ensure laboratory data compliance with analytical and regulatory standards.
• Review audits and proficiency test results.
• Familiarize and revise Quality Documents; maintain current SOPs and manuals.
• Support laboratory operations and training; maintain records and documentation.
• Prepare investigative and corrective action reports; monitor safety practices.
