Qualifications

The Microbiologist III serves as lead Microbiologist for the Environmental Microbiology Section. Coordinates with the Program Manager for the ordering of required supplies, all necessary annual Proficiency Test samples, and equipment/instrumentation. Serves as the primary trainer of new and current staff members.

  • Receives and analyzes samples in the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory. Reads, interprets, and records micro results.
  • Performs microbiological quality controls analyses and helps to maintain a current quality assurance manual. Analyzes microbiological audit samples within the prescribed time period.
  • Provides technical consultation to laboratory customers pertaining to microbiology.
  • Reads and reviews SOPs and the safety manual as needed and annually. Follows al safety procedures.
  • Completes all necessary administrative tasks (PCAS, SCEIS related functions, etc.) and documentation as required and requested. Performs other job duties as required or requested.

A Master’s Degree in microbiology and one year of microbiology experience; or a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and two years of microbiology experience; or a bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences with academic credits in microbiology and three years of microbiology laboratory experience. A doctorate in microbiology may be substituted for required work experience. Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment
  • Experience with general instrumentation software and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to:
    • Perform scientific mathematical calculations, highly complex tasks, and maintain accurate records
    • Communicate effectively with peers, other scientists, and service engineers
    • Must prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
    • Must be able to adhere to all safety requirements including the wearing of required safety equipment such as eye protection, laboratory coats, and nitrile gloves to assure the safe handling laboratory samples and media daily
    • Must stand for long periods of time and lift at least 30 lbs. to countertop level
  • This position requires the strict adherence to approved methods and standard operating procedures for the proper collection of quality and technically defensible data
  • This is a laboratory position and as such involves safely working with various types of glassware, the performance of repetitive tasks, and meticulous attention to detail

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
