Job description

Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties related to the care and management of patients in accordance with Brown University Health's mission, vision, and values. This includes consideration of the lifespan, developmental stages, and cultural patterns. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of patients.

Responsibilities:

  1. Obtains and records detailed medical histories; performs and documents complete physical examinations; records progress notes; prepares discharge summaries for physician signatures; draws blood for laboratory tests; administers fluids, blood, blood products, and medications via venipuncture or venous cut-down; initiates life-saving measures in emergencies until aid arrives.
  2. Performs comprehensive and problem-focused history and physical exams; interprets laboratory and diagnostic procedures; correlates subjective and objective data to formulate differential diagnoses and establish working diagnoses; formulates treatment plans within scope of practice; implements therapeutic interventions; exercises judgment on problems requiring consultation or referral to the supervising orthopedic surgeon or other healthcare professionals.
  3. Initiates patient orders for admission as directed by the physician and according to hospital procedures.
  4. Assesses patient status; participates in developing patient care management plans with registered nurses and physicians.
  5. Maintains adherence to hospital/department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  6. Orders, collects, and performs laboratory or diagnostic procedures, including blood and tissue specimens, EMG, electrocardiograms, compartment pressure measurements, X-rays, CT, MRI, and bone scans.
  7. Assists in surgery, including first assist duties, tissue closures, application of appliances, and other delegated actions.
  8. Conducts hospital rounds, writes orders, and manages calls for the orthopedic surgeon.
  9. Evaluates and clarifies clinical conditions; formulates and implements treatment or therapeutic plans; documents discharge summaries, histories, and physicals.
  10. Evaluates, screens, and counsels patients on health maintenance; promotes community resource utilization; participates in research, manages databases, and performs quality assurance activities.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with a B.S. Degree or equivalent. Certified or eligible for certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. Certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

EXPERIENCE:

One to two years of experience in a clinical orthopedic practice, including orthopedic surgical procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare settings such as hospitals, physicians' offices, and ancillary healthcare facilities. Involves working with medical equipment and direct patient contact. Hazards are minimized through adherence to safety procedures and use of protective equipment.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Functions independently within broad departmental policies, practices, and physician guidelines. Consults with superiors for clarification or hospital-wide policy exceptions.

None.
