SUMMARY

Under general supervision and following established protocols and procedures, operates Ultrasound imaging equipment to acquire images for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

Performs in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures, follows the facility's standards for ethical business conduct, and conducts herself as a positive role model and team member. Participates in facility committees, meetings, in‑services, and activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate ultrasound imaging equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information, ensuring proper patient preparation, history, and positioning.
• Select proper imaging techniques and follow department protocols to provide a complete study for the requested exam.
• Provide complete documentation of the exam and give the radiologist an initial interpretation.
• Explain the exam to the patient, considering physical and emotional needs while maintaining ethical standards, including patient confidentiality, professional conduct, and privacy.
• Maintain a clean work area, prepare equipment, patient rooms, and stock supplies; inform appropriate personnel when orders must be placed.
• Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement projects, and utilize cost‑containment measures.
• Remain flexible for shift coverage and overtime as necessary.
• Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure when performing patient procedures.
• Utilize aseptic sterile technique for invasive procedures and assist the radiologist or physician during such procedures; maintain supplies in a clean and organized manner.
• Communicate effectively with departmental and other Hawthorn Medical personnel and community interactions as appropriate.
• Be knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment used during the workday, including imaging equipment, film processors, and systems needed to check appointments and patient reports.
• Notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs.
• Execute paperwork for each patient exam, including CPT codes and verify all physician order sheets prior to the exam.
• Remain current on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment by reading manuals and technical journals; participate in educational programs; maintain CEUs that meet state and national guidelines.
• May be called upon to oversee and instruct personnel and students as assigned by the Imaging Manager.
• Provide indirect supervision of support staff.
• Perform all other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
• Must possess analytical abilities to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross‑sectional anatomy.
• Must present a positive attitude and a professional appearance in compliance with the dress code policy.

EDUCATION

ARMS Certification or ARDMS eligible: Graduate of an accredited ultrasound program with a minimum of 12 months full‑time clinical ultrasound experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be aware of hazards within the department and adhere to safety standards as stated by OSHA. Must possess the knowledge and ability to implement a patient code, report, and respond to a fire or other emergency event on the premises. Duties frequently require walking, standing, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, computing, and hearing; occasional sitting. May be exposed to patient conditions including infectious diseases, blood, and bodily fluids.
