Job summary

Penguin Random House Children’s Books in New York seeks a Designer for Middle Grade and Chapter Books. The hybrid role covers covers and interiors across imprints, from concept to final art, mechanicals, and prepress.

You will collaborate with art directors, editors, and publishers to develop strong visual programs and deliver print-ready PDFs on schedule. A strong MG/CH design/typography portfolio is essential.

Qualifications

• Experience designing covers and interiors for MG, chapter books, and graphic novels.
• Ability to collaborate with art directors, editors, and publishers to develop covers and support publishing programs.
• Proficiency in producing print-ready PDFs and mechanicals per printing standards.
• Experience hiring illustrators and designers, presenting art samples, and negotiating contracts.
• Art direct illustrators from concept to final art.

Responsibilities

• Work with art directors, publishers, and editors to develop covers and support publishing programs overall.
• Responsible for design of titles from concept to final art to print-ready PDFs.
• Research and hire illustrators and designers; present art samples in meetings.
• Art direct illustrators from concept through revisions to final art for covers.
• Prepare cover and interior mechanicals for routing and production; meet deadlines.
• Track design trends in MG and chapter books; maintain quality and timelines.
