Job summary

Random House Children’s Books in New York City seeks a Designer for middle grade and chapter books. You will design covers and interiors across imprints, guiding projects from concept through final art, mechanicals, and prepress in a fast-paced, collaborative team.

The ideal candidate has a strong portfolio in book design and typography, expert knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop, and the ability to work on heavily illustrated titles, while maintaining schedules and producing print-ready art.

Qualifications

• Portfolio showcasing strong book design and typography including children’s design.
• Strong knowledge of Adobe Suite’s current InDesign and Photoshop programs and at least basic understanding of Adobe Suite’s Illustrator and Acrobat programs.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with art directors, publishers, and editors to develop covers.
• Design high-quality covers and sales materials from concept to print-ready PDFs.
• Research and hire illustrators, negotiate contracts, and process payments.
• Art direct illustrators from concept to final art for covers.
• Prepare cover and interior mechanicals for routing and production.
• Track design trends in MG and chapter books.
• Develop culturally competent work to represent diverse backgrounds.
• Communicate clearly with internal and external contacts.
• Attend production, cover, team, and title meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Maintain attention to detail and time management.
