Job summary

Type One Energy seeks a Metrology Lead Engineer in Knoxville, TN to drive measurement excellence for large steel assemblies in a fusion-oriented program. You will select metrology systems, shape our approach, and create procedures ensuring components meet specs before integration.

You will lead calibration programs, guide designs for manufacturability, and work with a team of experts across engineering disciplines to deliver reliable assemblies for grid-scale fusion power.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, physics or related discipline.
• 7+ years of metrology, precision measurement, or quality engineering experience; 3+ years in leadership.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of calibration methods, uncertainty analysis, and MSA.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for metrology, measurement, and inspection; advise cross‑functional teams on manufacturing and assembly impacts.
• Define, design and develop metrology solutions including hardware, test software, and qualification of components.
• Support creation and implementation of manufacturing process and equipment qualification plans.
• Collect metrology data to correlate to performance metrics like spatial envelopes and alignment requirements.
• Lead problem solving for non‑conforming components and systems.
• Review, guide, and validate designs for technical excellence and manufacturability.
• Support FMEA, DFMA, and risk assessments for critical hardware and assemblies.
• Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams on fabrication, assembly, and qualification.
• Develop and execute test plans for vendor components and assemblies; write engineering drawings and specifications.
• Develop calibration programs for mechanical, optical, and electronic measurement systems.
• Contribute to process development docs, design reviews, and configuration control.
