Job description

Hello, we’re Metro! Metro is dedicated to shaping a better future for the greater Portland region. The work the people of Metro do every day benefits the lives of the people who live here, today, and tomorrow.

Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services (WPES) department is looking for a Production Supervisor to join the team at the Metro South Transfer Station. This role leads the people and heavy equipment that move material out of the station, from the pit through compaction, loading and outbound hauling. You will plan each day’s production and adjust staff and equipment as volumes and conditions change so the station keeps the capacity it needs. You will report to the Operations and Production Manager and supervise Heavy Equipment Operators and Transfer Station Technician II employees. This is a great opportunity for an experienced supervisor who enjoys solving problems in real time and building a safe, skilled team.

As the Production Supervisor you will
  • Supervise Heavy Equipment Operators and Transfer Station Technician II employees, including assigning work, setting expectations, evaluating performance and providing coaching and training.
  • Manage attendance and coverage and carry out supervisory responsibilities, including hiring, consistent with Metro policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Plan and direct daily production, including pit operations, compaction, loading, trailer and container movement, and outbound hauling.
  • Set daily production priorities and adjust work assignments and equipment deployment throughout the day.
  • Track material volumes, pit and compaction capacity, trailer availability and loading activity to spot constraints early and keep enough capacity for transfer floor operations.
  • Coordinate outbound hauling with internal staff, contractors and haulers, keeping track of trailer and container availability, trailer counts and backup capacity.
  • Keep heavy equipment and other production resources assigned and ready by identifying equipment problems early and coordinating maintenance, repair and replacement with the appropriate staff.
  • Work closely with the Interior Operations Supervisor to match incoming material volumes with pit, compaction, loading and outbound capacity and prevent bottlenecks.
  • Make sure employees follow safety requirements, operating procedures and safe equipment practices.
  • Identify and respond to production hazards and unsafe conditions, working with the Operations and Production Manager and safety staff on corrective actions.
  • Maintain and improve production procedures and work practices, monitoring performance and recommending ways to increase efficiency and throughput.
Attributes for success
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and the ability to recognize and address hazards in an industrial setting with heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of transfer station, solid waste, logistics or similar industrial operations, including how pit, compaction, loading and hauling activities affect each other.
  • Supervisory skill in team building, coaching, training, employee development and performance management in a union environment.
  • Ability to make timely, independent decisions about staffing, equipment and priorities as conditions change throughout the day.
  • Skill in analyzing production performance, identifying constraints and putting practical improvements in place.
  • Ability to balance safety, material flow, production, customer service and available resources.
  • Ability to set clear goals, expectations, procedures and performance measures for a production team.
  • Ability to solve operational problems and build effective working relationships across teams and with contractors and haulers.
  • Clear, direct and respectful communication with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors and customers.
  • Ability to understand and fairly administer Metro policies, work rules and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Commitment to public service, cultural humility, teamwork, accountability and openness to change.
