The Water Resources Department has an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to become part of the Water Distribution team as a Meter Technician. The Meter Technician, under general supervision, reads and services water meters and records consumption for approximately 30,000 accounts; identifies water meter equipment problems; performs water meter maintenance; notifies customers of delinquencies; and responds to customer inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.

  • A primary duty of the Meter Technician includes accurately reading a scheduled meter route, while briskly walking an average of 10 miles per day.

Minimum Qualifications To Apply

Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Some meter reading experience is desirable.

License or Certificate

  • Possession of a Class C driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must obtain a Grade I Water Distribution Certificate within one year of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR, First Aid, and Pepper Spray Certificates within six months of employment.

Essential Duties

  • Read residential, commercial, and industrial water meters using computerized devices; record readings.
  • Review meter readings for accuracy; report anomalies.
  • Respond to customer requests, complaints, and inquiries; re-read meters as needed; deliver delinquent notices.
  • Discontinue water services when required; turn off water flow on delinquent accounts.
  • Check for leaks in water mains; repair meter-related leaks; notify customers.
  • Replace meter lids and coverings.
  • Prepare operational reports related to water meter activities.
  • Operate and maintain City vehicles safely.
  • Assist with routing new accounts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Special Requirements

Physical skills and work environment include sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, twisting, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, confined spaces, and chemicals; ability to travel to different sites. For example, this includes brisk walking an average of 10 miles per day, lifting covers, and bending to read meters.
