Job summary

Duke Energy in North Carolina is seeking a qualified field technician to join our team. This role requires an associate degree or 3-5 years of relevant experience, a valid driver's license, and strong communication skills to interact with customers and colleagues.

You will work outdoors in varying weather, drive daily, assist with electrical installations, metering, and troubleshooting, and must pass background screening to meet NERC CIP requirements.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in electronics/electrical/computer engineering tech.
  • 3-5 years field work experience or related.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principles and basic math.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

Basic/Required Contributions
  • Associate or higher degree from an accredited tech school or college in electronics engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, computer engineering technology or communications technology.
  • OR have 3-5 years prior field work experience relevant to job description or comparable work experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Effective Written and verbal communications skills necessary for customer and team interaction.
  • Knowledge of basic/electrical principles and demonstrated proficiency in basic math skills.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and able to run common application programs such as Microsoft Office Products.
  • Ability to pass background screening to become NERCI-CIP compliant.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience with electrical schematics, electrical troubleshooting and installations.
  • Familiarity with watt-hour metering and associated equipment including installing, testing, troubleshooting and programming of meters.
  • Knowledge of Interchange Tie-Testing, Wholesale/Transmission metering and Plant Metering.
  • Knowledge of high-end metering installations including JemStar, ION, Q1000 and translate meters.
  • Knowledge of Electric distributions systems, e.g. different services types and voltages.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Mobile Work Management Systems (SS9) application as well as other Duke applications such as Maplink, CBIS, Powertrack, etc..
  • Prior experience with telecommunications devices (i.e. Wireless, Cellular, RS 232/474, ethernet).
  • Prior experience with communication protocols (ie DNP, MODBUS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated problem solving and general troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of service area within reporting location.
Working Conditions
  • Safety is imperative.
  • Work environment is normally outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Driving is required on a daily basis and occasional overnight stays.
  • Daily work received and completed via mobile laptops in trucks.
  • Squatting, lifting and carrying up to 60 pounds is required to handle testing equipment and materials.
  • Construction sites and congested areas occasional work at elevated heights from a ladder, platform or bucket.
  • Most work performed around energized electrical apparatus.
  • Frequent customer contact often involving conflict resolution.
  • Subject to call out, extension of day, and weekend work for scheduled projects or emergency restoration work.
  • Performance is monitored and evaluated through remote technologies and audits with limited direct supervision.
