Job summary

Jobtailor in Charlotte, NC is seeking a field metering technician to install, maintain, test, and troubleshoot transformer-rated and self-contained metering systems. You will gather load profile data and perform interconnection testing while working with electric utilities.

The role requires an associate or higher in electronics/engineering technology or equivalent field experience, a valid driver’s license, and ability to pass NERC-CIP screening. Expect travel and overnight stays as needed.

Qualifications

  • Associate or higher degree in electronics engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, computer engineering technology or communications technology, OR 3–5 years prior field work experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Effective written and verbal communication for customer and team interaction
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principles and math
  • Ability to pass background screening for NERC-CIP compliance
  • Experience with electrical schematics, troubleshooting and installations
  • Familiarity with watt-hour metering and related equipment
  • Knowledge of Interchange Tie-Testing, Wholesale/Transmission metering and Plant Metering
  • Knowledge of high-end metering installations (JemStar, ION, Q1000) and translate meters
  • Understanding of electric distribution systems and voltages
  • Experience with Mobile Work Management Systems (SS9) and Duke apps
  • Experience with telecommunications devices and protocols (DNP, MODBUS)
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of service area within posting location
  • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Perform single-phase and polyphase metering work including installation, maintenance, testing and special meter investigations
  • Troubleshoot and verify meter installations including Wholesale/Transmission and Plant metering
  • Obtain data from metering equipment such as load profile data
  • Drive daily and stay overnight as needed
  • Complete daily work via mobile laptops in trucks
  • Work outside in varying weather and around energized equipment
  • Attend call-outs, extended workdays and weekends for projects or emergencies
  • Operate with limited supervision while performance is monitored remotely

Job description

  • Perform single-phase and polyphase self-contained and transformer-rated metering work, including installation, maintenance, testing and special meter investigations
  • Troubleshoot, wire and verify complex transformer-rated metering installations, including Wholesale/Transmission deliveries and Plant metering
  • Perform Interchange Tie-Testing and witness testing with other electric utilities
  • Obtain data from metering equipment, such as load profile data
  • Perform metering material handling duties
  • Work outside in varying weather conditions and around energized electrical apparatus
  • Drive daily and occasionally stay overnight
  • Complete daily work via mobile laptops in trucks
  • Handle testing equipment and materials by squatting, lifting and carrying up to 60 pounds
  • Work at construction sites, in congested areas and occasionally at elevated heights from ladders, platforms or buckets
  • Maintain frequent customer contact, including conflict resolution
  • Participate in scheduled call-outs, extended workdays and weekend work for projects or emergency restoration
  • Work with limited direct supervision while performance is monitored through remote technologies and audits
Requirements
  • Associate or higher degree from an accredited tech school or college in electronics engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, computer engineering technology or communications technology, OR 3–5 years prior field work experience relevant to the job description or comparable work experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for customer and team interaction
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principles and demonstrated proficiency in basic math skills
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and ability to run common application programs such as Microsoft Office Products
  • Ability to pass background screening to become NERC-CIP compliant
  • Prior experience with electrical schematics, electrical troubleshooting and installations
  • Familiarity with watt-hour metering and associated equipment, including installing, testing, troubleshooting and programming of meters
  • Knowledge of Interchange Tie-Testing, Wholesale/Transmission metering and Plant Metering
  • Knowledge of high-end metering installations including JemStar, ION, Q1000 and translate meters
  • Knowledge of electric distribution systems, including different service types and voltages
  • Knowledge and experience working with Mobile Work Management Systems (SS9) and Duke applications such as Maplink, CBIS and Powertrack
  • Prior experience with telecommunications devices, including wireless, cellular, RS 232/474 and Ethernet
  • Prior experience with communication protocols, including DNP and MODBUS
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and general troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of the service area within the reporting location
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future

Demonstrates expertise in metering work, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of transformer-rated metering systems. Proficient in utilizing mobile work management systems and ensuring compliance with NERC-CIP standards.
