Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a related field.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
Notes to Applicants

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for a range of metering activities for utility customers, including:

  • Disconnecting and reconnecting electric and water meters, de-energized and energized electric services below 600 volts.
  • Reading electric and water meters (analog and AMR / AMI meters), and using hand-held meter reading computer.
  • Organizing routes using a mobile device (e.g., Toughbook) to document leaks, problems, unsafe meter locations, hazards, and safety issues.

Driving Requirement

This position requires a valid Class “C” driver’s license or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within 36 months.

Additional Requirements

Work Schedule & Conditions

Salary & Location

Pay Range: $23.44 – $26.83

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in electric utility work and meter reading.
  • Experience with laptops, mobile workforce software, and electrical installations.
  • Decision-making skills in high-volume, high-stress environments.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
Responsibilities & Knowledge

Includes performing metering activities, customer service, route organization, meter inspection, and documentation. Knowledge of metering requirements, city policies, and effective communication skills are essential.
