Job summary

City of Altamonte Springs seeks a Meter Reader to accurately read water meters and record data using handheld devices. The role involves physical work outdoors and responding to emergencies as needed.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and is willing to undergo fingerprint-based background screening. Prior meter-reading experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Read water meter registers daily and record data on handheld unit.
• Clean mud and debris from meter boxes and locate buried meters.
• Deliver delinquent and shut-off notices to residents and businesses.
• Drive to and from City work sites.
• Remove and install water meters, turning them on and off as necessary.
• Identify possible cross connections.
• Conduct flow tests on water meters as needed.
• Be available for emergency call-outs and perform additional duties as assigned.
• In emergencies, all employees may be required to perform duties outside their normal job description.
• Complete required trainings as specified in the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

Job description

Read and properly record readings for water meters throughout the City.

• Read water meter registers daily to be recorded onto handheld unit (currently using Itron FC300 device).
• Clean mud and debris from meter boxes and locate buried meters.
• Deliver delinquent and shut off notices to residents and businesses.
• Drive to and from City work sites.
• Remove and install water meters, turning them on and off as necessary.
• Identify possible cross connections.
• Conduct flow test on water meters, as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned. Be available for emergency call-outs.
• In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential and may be required to perform duties outside of their normal job description.
• Complete required trainings as specified within the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid driver license. Must obtain Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Six (6) months experience reading utility meters.
• Willingness to adopt AI and emerging technologies.

Applicants must authorize and undergo fingerprint-based state and national criminal history screening. Employees in this position are subject to continuous criminal history monitoring throughout employment.

Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).

If selected, an essential functions assessment is required to measure the ability to safely perform the required physical demands.
