Job summary

Lynker, an employee-owned technical services firm, seeks a Meteorologist and GIS Developer to support NOAA/WPC projects. You will create forecast tools, leverage ensemble data, and help transition tools into operational use while contributing to IDSS capabilities.

Work with NCEP, NWS offices, and academia to enhance weather support. The role emphasizes web/app development, GIS data handling, and training materials to empower forecasters and partners.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in meteorology, hydrology or related earth sciences (MS or above).
  • Experience with deterministic and ensemble prediction data for hazardous weather.
  • Knowledge of weather forecasting - short to medium range.
  • Experience with GIS, GeoTiff, JSON, GeoJSON.
  • Knowledge of React, JavaScript, Zarr, Cloud Services, and version control.
  • Experience with software development support in a team environment.
  • Experience with Python and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for documentation and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with meteorologists and partners to develop forecast tools for short to medium time frames.
  • Use meteorological expertise to develop tools for hazard information (rainfall, snowfall, temperatures).
  • Develop web applications using modern industry languages and tools.
  • Coordinate with NOAA staff and researchers to improve forecast tools.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and attend related conferences and outreach events.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Collaborate to transition forecaster tools into operations within NOAA.
  • Develop training materials to transition new tools and techniques into operations.
