Job summary

GT TECHNOLOGIES INC. is seeking an experienced Metallurgical Engineer to manage the corporate metallurgy laboratory in Westland, Michigan.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee operation and upkeep of the metallurgical laboratory in Westland, MI.
  • Execute metallurgy lab work orders, materials R&D and special projects using lab resources and technicians.
  • Collaborate with Product and Manufacturing Engineers to specify materials and heat/surface treatments.
  • Perform evaluations, tests, experiments and analyses on materials used in valves and precision components.
  • Coordinate outsourced material evaluations and analyses.
  • Create and maintain material and heat treatment specifications and standards.
  • Support development of heat treatment processes at internal facilities and monitor outsourced heat treatment quality.
  • Write internal/external reports and stay current on material knowledge for products.

Job Details

Job Location: Westland, MI 48185. Position Type: Full Time. Education Level: 4 Year Degree. Job Shift: Day. Job Category: Engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the operation and upkeep of the corporate metallurgy laboratory in Westland.
  • Utilizes company resources, primarily the metallurgical lab and technicians, to execute objectives including metallurgy lab work orders, materials R&D and special projects.
  • Works with Product and Manufacturing Engineers to specify new materials, heat treatment, and surface treatment based on product application and manufacturing requirements.
  • Conducts evaluations, tests, experiments and analyses involving materials used in valve train and precision components.
  • Coordinates and oversees outsourced material evaluations and analysis.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining all material and heat treatment specifications and standards.
  • Supports development of heat treatment processes and instructions at internal heat treatment facilities.
  • Participates in evaluating and monitoring the performance of outsourced heat treatment operations.
  • Performs and participates in failure analysis investigations and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Works with internal and external heat treatment facilities to investigate metallurgical related quality issues and in implementing corrective actions.
  • Works with Purchasing Department to evaluate and select raw material and heat treat suppliers.
  • Writes reports for internal and external distribution.
  • Continually develops expertise in the materials used for the company’s current and future products.
  • Supports VAVE and continuous improvement initiatives related to materials and heat treatment.
  • Assists in areas such as safety, calibration, and mechanical testing as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Materials Science or Metallurgical Engineering from a college or university or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in ferrous metallurgy.
Skill Specifications
  • Strong background in ferrous metallurgy – specifically bearing material and low carbon steels.
  • Experience with material characterization techniques including optical and electron metallographic and mechanical testing.
  • Experience with various heat treatment processes including through-hardening, carburizing and carbonitriding.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to effectively use standard computer software (MS Office preferred).
  • Able to work on many projects at one time and to balance priorities based on multiple inputs.
  • Experienced working in an IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 accredited operation.
  • Experienced with CQI-9.
