Job summary

ExxonMobil in Spring, TX, is seeking a seasoned Materials Scientist to support metallurgical research and failure analysis in a busy lab. You will apply metallographic techniques (optical, SEM) and perform hardness testing, NDE, and sample preparation to characterize materials.

This role requires a B.S. or M.S. in materials science or metallurgy and at least five years’ hands-on lab experience, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work in a team while following SOPs and safety rules.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in materials science or metallurgy.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience in a Material Science/Testing Lab with a high degree of mechanical aptitude with equipment troubleshooting skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow proper lab procedures and uphold good housekeeping practices in lab.
  • Willingness to be involved in research that is highly exploratory in nature and may support programs within division and affiliate organizations.
  • Good communication skills for understanding and describing scientific observations, experimental plans and results, equipment and material design concepts.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tasks and integrate them into workflows.
  • Organized, punctual, and takes full responsibility for laboratory procedural compliance and safe laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, chemical and supply ordering, chemical inventory, safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Effective in a team working environment, enjoys challenges, and committed to lifelong learning.
  • Strictly adhere to SOPs for different methods and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a team environment while independently conducting materials research projects and failure analysis.
  • Collaborate with research engineers and affiliates to develop lab objectives and testing plans.
  • Apply metallographic and microscopic techniques (optical and SEM) to facilitate microstructural analysis.
  • Conduct hardness, micro-hardness, and field hardness testing techniques.
  • Perform NDE (i.e. PT, MT, UT) inspection methods in support of research and failure analysis efforts.
  • Carry out sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching of metallurgical samples.
  • Conduct direct cause failure analysis using standard laboratory methods to determine failure mechanism and material characterization.
  • Maintain lab equipment, lab supplies, and lab spaces.
  • Perform routine calibration, cleaning, and maintenance of instrumentation
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures, chemical hygiene plans and PPE requirements
  • Comply with quality management systems (e.g., ISO, GLP, internal QC standards)
