Job description

Bowman has an opportunity for a Metallurgical/Chemical Engineer II to join our team in Tucson, AZ.

Purpose

Provides intermediate-level engineering support focused on design, optimization, technical studies and project delivery for metallurgical processes and/or chemical plants. This role applies established engineering principles to analyze, design, and optimize processes related to extraction, refining and production while supporting project teams, operations, and clients.

Responsibilities
Leadership and Direction
  • Works under general supervision, demonstrating growing technical independence and decision‑making capability.
  • Contributes to multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating with process, mechanical, environmental, and project management staff.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives and promotes adherence to safety, quality, and operational standards.
At The Operational And Company Level
  • Applies metallurgical and chemical engineering principles to support design, analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization of processes.
  • Assists in evaluating process performance, identifying inefficiencies, and recommending improvements.
  • Supports development of technical reports, feasibility studies, and process documentation.
  • Participates in client interactions, supporting technical discussions and delivering solutions aligned with project goals.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contributes to innovation efforts, including new technologies, process improvements, and sustainability initiatives.
Do the Work
  • Performs process calculations, mass and energy balances, and material characterizations.
  • Develops and evaluates process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and equipment specifications.
  • Supports metallurgical testing, chemical analysis, and interpretation of laboratory and pilot‑scale data.
  • Assists in troubleshooting plant processes, including refining, extraction, separation, corrosion, and materials failure analysis.
  • Conducts data analysis to support process optimization, quality improvement, and operational efficiency.
  • Prepares technical memoranda, engineering reports, and design documentation.
  • Collaborates with field teams and may support site visits, commissioning, or operational assessments.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Three or more (3+) years of relevant engineering experience in metallurgical processing, chemical manufacturing, materials engineering, or related industries.
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred; progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is encouraged.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical processes (e.g., extractive metallurgy, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy) or chemical process systems.
  • Experience with process modeling, data analysis, and engineering software tools (e.g., METSIM, SysCAD, HSC, or similar, AutoCAD family of products).
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
