Job summary

United States Steel Corporation is seeking a Quality Assurance Metallographer at our Gary Works facility. The role focuses on defect analysis and quality control of steel products, utilizing SEM and optical microscopes, and performing hardness testing, with responsibility for technical reporting.

Candidates should have a metallurgy or engineering background, two years in steel manufacturing, and familiarity with quality systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology or Metallurgy preferred.
• Two years experience in steel or heavy industrial manufacturing.
• Lab experience is a plus.
• SEM experience is a plus.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 and API Q1 quality system requirements is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare internal and external samples for defect analysis using lab equipment.
• Perform defect analysis using scanning electron and optical microscopes.
• Write and distribute technical defect-analysis reports.
• Perform grain and Vickers hardness testing on steel grades as required.
• Carry out carbide testing as needed by customers.
• Provide technical and quality support to the production facilities.
• Apply problem solving and continuous improvement skills.
