General Summary & Scope

The Merchandise Manager (MM) is responsible for leading through Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values and contributing to a high-performing team that consistently delivers top-line sales growth for the store. The MM reports to the Operations Manager (OM). The MM guides a team of Task Associates and is accountable for supporting store operations including shipment, replenishment, omni-channel, price changes, and markdowns. This leader drives the store’s business focusing on performance, people, and process, requiring operational excellence, results-driven mindset, and effective leadership during unforeseen challenges.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The MM demonstrates Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values through the following duties:

Performance
  • Promote accountability to meet or exceed sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni-channel, and shrink goals.
  • Drive profitability through operational excellence, sales growth, and expense management.
  • Support store scheduling needs using forecast and payroll budgets to maximize productivity and meet goals.
  • Analyze financial and operational reports regularly and react promptly.
  • Utilize company programs and resources to improve store performance.
  • Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to enhance guest experience and sales.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, products, and services to better serve guests.
  • Maintain regular attendance and hold staff accountable to attendance policies.
People
  • Attract, hire, and retain diverse top talent.
  • Build an engaged team aligned with the Ulta Beauty brand through effective communication and collaboration.
  • Create an inclusive environment that fosters growth and engagement.
  • Support professional development through training, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Participate in ongoing training to enable continuous improvement.
  • Lead by example to promote operational excellence and a helpful guest experience.
Process
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Adhere to dress code and manage schedules using company tools.
  • Prioritize and execute store tasks including shipment, replenishment, and merchandising.
  • Protect assets and minimize loss through standards and procedures.
  • Manage inventory control processes and theft reporting.
  • Communicate store needs and insights to leadership.
Job Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma preferred.
Experience
  • 1-2+ years retail management or relevant experience.
  • Experience in financial management, driving sales, interpreting reports, managing payroll, and controlling expenses.
  • Proven retail management skills including inventory monitoring, operational excellence, and merchandising.
  • Leadership experience in attracting, developing, and motivating teams, and leading through change.
Skills
  • Proficiency with POS systems, Microsoft Office, and Apple devices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and adaptability under pressure.
Special Position Requirements
  • Flexible full-time schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Availability for early shifts starting at 5:00 a.m. and shifts on Sundays and Mondays.
Working Conditions
  • Mobility throughout the store during shifts.
  • Physical activities including bending, lifting up to 40 lbs., and repetitive movements.
  • Use of computers and office equipment.
