Job description

We’re a midsized architecture and engineering firm based in New Jersey, looking for a full-time MEP Staff Engineer 2 to join our team. You’ll take ownership of one or more MEP disciplines on mixed-use and multifamily projects, developing designs from initial calculations through permit and construction documents with guidance from an engineering project manager. You’ll also guide drafters and interns, coordinate with other design professionals, and help resolve questions during construction. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable applying codes and making design decisions, takes pride in the quality of their work, and is working toward PE licensure.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads system design for assigned trades, including load calculations, system sizing, and equipment selections, and presents recommended approaches to the project manager.

  • Prepares complete calculation packages to support permit filings, including NEC service load calculations and energy code compliance documentation.
  • Applies model and local codes to design decisions without step-by-step direction, identifies code issues early, and proposes solutions.
  • Writes and edits specification sections for assigned trades.
  • Produces and manages a trade's full drawing set in AutoCAD and Autodesk REVIT MEP, including plans, risers, schedules, and details, and assigns drafting tasks to drafters and interns.
  • Performs quality control checks on own work and on drafter and intern output before project manager review, using company checklists.
  • Keeps drawings, calculations, and specifications consistent with each other through each revision.
  • Coordinates shafts, ceiling space, roof equipment, and penetrations for assigned trades with the architect, structural engineer, and other consultants.
  • Represents the trade in project meetings when the project manager is not present and reports the outcomes.
  • Tracks hours against assigned tasks and flags scope changes or budget concerns to the project manager.
  • Leads existing conditions surveys for assigned trades and prepares existing conditions documentation.
  • Reviews submittals and responds to RFIs for assigned trades, with project manager sign-off.
  • Conducts site observation visits and prepares field reports and punch lists.
  • Drafts responses to plan examiner objections for assigned trades.
  • Guides staff engineers, drafters, and interns on technical tasks and company standards.
  • Contributes to company design guides and in-house training sessions.
